The Specialised Textiles Association (STA) is committed to supporting formal industry training.
STA works collaboratively with Government bodies and Registered Training Organisations (RTO's) to facilitate the development, interests, and relevance of the specialised textiles industry.
Over the years STA has developed close relationships with RTO's delivering training for Cert III in Manufactured Textile Products and Cert III in Automotive and Marine Trimming Technology. This relationship, has enabled STA to be part of the review and input process into both qualifications in order to ensure industry relevance.
STA is represented in the Textiles Clothing and Footwear Industry Reference Committee as well as the Victorian Industry Advisory Group for Manufacturing and the Furnishing Industry Training Advisory Group.
National Training Package
Fabricator training throughout Australia is delivered by various RTO's with reference to meeting national Competency Standards set out in a booklet called the National Training Package ("NTP"). The NTP, into which Specialised Textiles Association had considerable development input, ensures training is delivered in a uniform way nationally. STA's interest and involvement in the development of the NTP is ongoing.
The training packages that closely align with the specialised textiles industry are:
Delivery
Methods of delivery vary from state to state and region to region; and can be broken down broadly into 3 main methods.
Work place training, with an RTO located remotely to the business, perhaps interstate.
TAFE based training.
A mixture of 1. and 2. with RTOs delivering some parts of the training and the business delivering the balance in the workplace.
The Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in your state and Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) can assist in recruiting trainees and providing advice on how to access Government funding available to businesses taking on trainees. Training can similarly be provided to existing staff as part of Recognition of Prior Learning.
